Europe is taking a step towards greater digital autonomy. The Netherlands, France, Germany and Italy are collaborating to launch DC-Edic: the Digital Commons European Digital Infrastructure Consortium.
This is a European initiative for the development of open and transparent digital commons. It aims to reduce dependence on large American tech companies and provide opportunities for public alternatives in the fields of AI, cloud computing and cybersecurity.
Marleen Stikker, director of Waag Futurelab, was interviewed by Trouw about the initiative. She sees it as an important development:
"This is a hopeful first step. Digital commons are created to improve society as a whole, and that requires non-private parties."
