Waag Futurelab is participating in the Warming Up festival in November. Together with FIBER, Waag is organising a workshop and panel discussion on the theme of regenerative technology. Businesses and governments are very confident that we can innovate our way out of the climate crisis. But the reality is that new technology and how we use it are mainly making the situation worse.
All devices depend on natural resources such as water, electricity and metals. This means that no technology is 100% sustainable. Waag is therefore researching regenerative technology: technology designed from a systemic perspective that takes the planet, people and other life forms as its starting point. What does technology look like when we base design choices on ecological impact?
Workshop: From generative technology to regenerative technology
Monday 24 November, 19:30 hrs
In the workshop From generative to regenerative technology, Waag's regenerative tech experts Ola Bonati and Judith Veenkamp explore the hidden costs of digital systems and how we can work towards regenerative technology. Using permacomputing as a starting point, we will reflect together on technology that is not only circular, but also innovative and restorative. You will also be given practical exercises and the space to experiment with ideas for technology that can truly heal our planet.
Panel: (De)Growing Infrastructures
Thursday 27 November, 20:00 hrs
(De)Growing Infrastructures is an evening of short lectures by artists and a more in-depth panel discussion. Various artists and researchers will discuss regenerative forms of computing: from the collaboration of micro-organisms to digital composting. With Ola Bonati, Sunjoo Lee, Fieke Jansen, and others.
About Warming Up Festival
From Thursday 30 October to 30 November, the Warming Up festival will take place in Amsterdam. We Are Warming Up presents and produces art and media projects related to climate issues. Even though climate change is the greatest threat to life on Earth, for many people it still feels abstract. Now is the time to give artists and creative makers a platform. After all, we need imagination to bring about change, to reflect on the times we live in and the future we want.
