Democracy doesn’t start with elections, but in the classroom. In conversations, in differences of opinion, in who gets a say – and who doesn’t. Young people experience democracy every day, often without us even realising it. But how do you make that visible? And how do you give young people the feeling that their voice matters?
Democracy in the Making: Creative Methods for Youth and Educators is a handbook for teachers to facilitate discussions about everyday democracy in the classroom using creative methods. It offers practical methods to support youngsters (aged 11 to 18) in developing democratic skills. The methods call for action: to play, to be creative, to try new things and to discover, together with young people, what everyday democracy is. Through these activities, the handbook promotes communication skills, critical thinking, collaboration, participation, creativity and reflection.

About Critical ChangeLab
The handbook Democracy in the Making was developed as part of the project Critical ChangeLab, in which Waag Futurelab investigates the relationship between young people and democracy, and thereby the future of European democracy in the 21st century. In addition to methodologies, the handbook contains concrete examples and insights from the research.
