Waag Open: who owns the space?

How do we see the Earth from outer space? From a distance, it looks like a soothing blue globe. But in reality, the world is on fire.

The sky above us is getting increasingly full of technology, including satellites that our smartphones use, but also satellites for weather and climate measurements and for warfare. But how Much fuller can it get up there, and what do we actually have to say about it?  Waag has mapped this out from a technological perspective, but also from the perspective of what that space means for our culture and other cultures. We call it the Planetary Public Stack. With this stack, we are not only trying to map out the technological aspects, but also the cultural aspects.

Waag has mapped this out from a technological perspective, but also from the perspective of what that space means for our culture and other cultures. We call it the Planetary Public Stack. With this stack, we not only try to gain insight into the accumulation of technologies in that vertical public space above us, but we also investigate our influence on it.

During this Waag Open, we will discuss our perception of the earth and dive into the Planetary Public Stack together with artist Michele Boulogne and anthropologist Danick Trouwloon.

Michele Boulogne, an artist of French-Caribbean origin, is involved in the development of the Planetary Public Stack, drawing on her own imagination and that of the people of Martinique, of whom she is a part. In addition, Dutch-Caribbean researcher Danick Trouwloon will reflect on the Planetary Public Stack in the context of her research into ecological management and climate change in relation to the populations of the various islands.

Come to Waag Open on Thursday 2 October and let us know how you see the planet!

The programme is a result of the More-than-planet project and is made possible in part by the AFK's 3Package Deal programme, which supports Michele Boulogne's work.

The programme is also part of KWS.
